First Steps to Preaching Skills: four weeks from 24th February 2009, tutor Graham Hutchinson, Pastor of Elim York

Certificate Level Courses

Substantial courses, running across 14/15 weeks, which can be taken on their own or used to gain the Certificate in Christian Studies from St John’s College, Nottingham and/or qualifications up to degree level.

Old Testament Introduction: starts Tuesday 10th February at 7.30 pm for fourteen weeks (Cost £100).

New Course: FRESH !

FRESH ! Training to lead fresh expressions of church. Ideal for Christian leaders or those training for leadership. The course runs from 13 to 17 July in York. It offers: in depth Bible Study of the book of Acts; input from the national training officer of ‘Fresh Expressions’ and David Goodhew (Cranmer Hall, Durham); visits to exciting new forms of church; input from local leaders such as Roger Simpson (St Michael-le-Belfrey), Graham Hutchinson, (Elim, York), Jeremy Fletcher (York Minster), John Wilson (Gateway Christian Fellowship). First Steps to Preaching

Tutor: Graham Hutchinson. Starts Tuesday 24^th February for 4 weeks. Cost £20
Part 1. Development of the correct attitude both in preparation and before your audience. Including how to stand before your listeners, Managing fear, eye contact, personal presentation, etc.

Part 2. Developing Your Delivery. Includes microphone technique, how to start and how to stop, speech

Part 3. Choosing And Preparing Your Preaching Topic. Includes constructing the sermon, assembling the material, structure, plus notes and how to use them

Part 4. Optional practical exercises.

In each session there will be time for discussion and practical exercises.

Starts: Tuesday 27th May 2008 for 5 weeks at St Cuthbert’s Centre, Peasholme Green

This course will look at the preaching, witness and call of the three “major” (Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel) and twelve “minor” prophets.

We will cover the situation in which these prophets found themselves. How they conveyed God’s views about the conditions of individuals and countries, mistakes.

We will look at short and long term prophecies, fulfillment, the nature of prophecy.

We will see how what they said relates to the 21st century; to church, country and globe and prophecy in the church.

This course is ideal for those looking to step into leadership, or as a refreshing review for those already operating in some leadership position, be it in cells, alpha or some operational team in the church. The ethos of this course is strongly tied to a New Testament foundation, but the lessons of it are just as a appropriate in any sphere of life as they are in church. All sessions are ‘workshop style’. You will have the opportunity to take an active part in the learning experience.

This course will look at the NT teaching on what the cross meant for first century Christians and how its message remains today at the core of Christian witness. It will draw upon Old Testament predictions of the death of Jesus.

There will be a focus on what Jesus said about His death and how Paul and other NT writers understood the eternal work of Jesus on the cross. It will conclude with the powerful affirmations of Revelation.

In this session we will examine the role of servanthood in leadership, looking what this ‘looks like’ practically and try to reconcile a Christian world view with a contemporary paradigm of leadership.
